American and allied aircraft struck Afghanistan 1,170 times last year, according to new USAF statistics (h/t Danger Room). This year, OEF and ISAF planes have already conducted 566 strikes. To put this in perspective, consider that even at the height of the Surge in 2007, Afghanistan was bombed almost twice as often as Iraq.
The next time some shit-hot COIN expert from CNAS proceeds to offer us nuggets of wisdom about civilian casualties as a metric, remember these numbers. The best way to protect a population is to stop killing it.
