Come January 1, U.S. troops will be in Iraq most likely under a new, bilateral Status of Forces Agreement with strict stipulations as to where they can operate and how.
Here’s what I’m wondering:
Will MNF-I still embed reporters? If so, under what rules? Will journalists still be able to flit in and out on military flights without ever going through Iraqi customs or immigration? If not, how will we cover the crucially important last three years of the American military adventure in Iraq? Certainly, as security improves, more journalists will go in on their own, and those stories are long overdue. But you don’t cover the withdrawal of a superpower’s army from a warzone without access to the troops. At least I can’t.
If anyone has answers, let me know. MNF-I still has the old info up on its website.
