Here’s something that’s been bugging me:
If McCain wins, the United States will have a commander-in-chief who thinks the war in Iraq is somehow winnable, and a commanding general who only four years ago thought you can beat an insurgency with heavy artillery.
Granted, Odierno has apparently since converted to COIN, and he will have Petraeus to look after him. Still, how will he respond when the shit hits the fan? When the sahwat/CLC/SoI house of cards collapses and the U.S. faces an invigorated insurgency? And what will his commander-in-chief do?
Plus, I still haven’t figured out how to explain the senator’s remark that Odierno is “maybe not perfect, but I think he has done a magnificent job.” Would President McCain be content with anyone less than perfect to fight the war his political future hangs on?
